Marlen Khutsiev
BIOGRAPHY
Biography
Marlen Khutsiev was born on December, 4th, 1925 in Tbilisi. MarlenKhutsiev was a key figure in cinema of the 1960s. This graceful person with a quiet, subdued voice looks quite different from the well-known film directors who are often compared to military commanders. All those who described this master, marked his highly contemplative. It was far from being a cliché, just really the very first characteristic impression of meeting him.
Major themes of Khutsiev’s work are the problems and relationships of contemporary youth. Detailed, unhurried unfolding of the plot line, distinguished by documentary accuracy, deep emotional drama, and subtle lyricism, characterizes the films Spring on Zarechnaia Street (1956, in collaboration with F. K. Mironer), Two Fedors (1959),I’m Twenty (1965, awarded a prize at the Twenty-sixth International Film Festival in Venice), July Rain (1967), and It Was May (1970, made for television).
Epilogue (Poslesloviye) (1983) is one of the most prophetical and bitter films. With unostentatious power it revealed the alienation theme; as if predicting the future, it showed a new type of the young pragmatist. RostislavPlyatt played one of his best roles in this film. In 1992, Khutsiev's film Infinitas won two awards at the Berlin International Film Festival. For more than 25 years MarlenKhutsiev has been teaching in VGIK;
