Hana is a psychologist – independent – emancipated in a way. Many other characters appear in the film – young and old, rich and poor, who visit Hana’s office and spew their problems on her, sometimes serious, sometimes rather comical. Everyone pines for love, family, interesting work, success, riches, and satisfaction in their lives.
Chytilova was born in Ostrava, Czechoslovakia, on February 1929. As a young adult, she studied philosophy and architecture. Trying to find herself, she worked as a technical draftsman for a chemical laboratory, before landing a job as a clapper girl at the film studio in Barrandov. At Barrandov, she discovered her passion for filmmaking and was assigned to be an assistant director. She studied direction under Otakar Vavra, a veteran director who had done much to get the film academy firmly established. Chytilova directed her first feature film, Something Different, in 1963.
